INFRARED vs. THERMAL IMAGING
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN INFRARED CAMERA AND THERMAL IMAGING CAMERAS? Very basically, infrared captures the heat coming off of an object and generates a picture of it, and thermal imaging captures the difference in temperature between an object and its immediate surroundings. When it comes to locating moisture, a thermal imaging camera is the better choice. We are InterNACHI® Infrared Certified® Thermography Inspectors.
Infrared vs. Thermal Imaging Inspections
With a top notch reputation as Licensed Home Inspectors in South and Central Florida, thermal imaging is best used to detect deficiencies that the naked eye cannot.
Although it will not show moisture, it can and will show moist areas that are cooler due to the evaporative cooling effect.
With infrared there is a bit of interpretation that may be needed depended on way it shows.
As far as detecting moisture, that depends. Thermal does not detect moisture directly. It detects temperature differential, and as long as there is a degree or two difference where the water is from evaporation it can be an indicator that there may be moisture. It is not a replacement for a good moisture meter. We also use a moisture meter, both for detecting and diagnosing moisture issues, during an inspection/assessment.
Through advanced thermal imaging, we identify hidden issues such as heat anomalies, electrical faults, and energy losses, preventing potential problems from escalating.
